Q: Is there any way to incorporate superfoods into my summertime grilling?
You bet! Just because you've got the grill fired up doesn't mean you have to leave superfoods behind - there are many ways superfoods can enhance your favorite summer dishes in both flavor and nutrition! Here are a few methods to keep in mind:
Marinades - Every grill master knows that the secret of a good protein or veggie on the grill is a good marinade… and that the best marinades are homemade. This summer, why not try adding an extra healthy “secret†into your special blend by way of superfoods. A spoonful of maca powder can enhance Asian-flavored marinades, like this delectable Teriyaki Sauce. This ingredient is very grill appropriate as its nutrition is primarily based in minerals, which are not effected by high heat. Coconut Palm Sugar is also a wonderful sweetener to use in marinades, which adds a slightly caramel flavor to these Pineapple Tofu Kabobs.
Fresh salsas - The combination of something cooked at high heat with an uber fresh mixture is a go-to pairing of year-round, but especially in the heat of summer. Salsas are also a fantastic way to incorporate superfoods as they don't require cooking, meaning practically any superfood can be used (and still retain all of its nutrition). Some of my favorite superfoods to mix into fresh salsas include camu powder, goldenberries, and goji berries. Try the Goji Berry Salsa from my book Superfood Kitchen - it's slightly sweet, slightly spicy flavor it delicious with just about anything hot off the grill.
Spreads & Dips - Practically every type of dip around can be made with superfoods. All the classics - ranch, ketchup, and barbeque sauce can be stealthfully loaded up with unique flavors and ingredients, from blended hemp seeds to maqui berry powder for extra antioxidants. Instead of reaching for a bottle, try blending together this simple recipe for Acai Ketchup … talk about an upgrade!
