    Ask the Chef - Hemp

By Julie Morris, Superfood Chef | September 15, 2014

Q: Should I be concerned about eating hemp before my drug test or while working?

Understandably, this is a common question we get about our hemp line of food products, and can be an equally sensitive subject matter amongst various employers -- in fact, some agencies even discourage the use of hemp altogether, regardless of the origin of hemp. Much of this confusion stems from grouping the various forms of cannibus together: a shame because although both industrial/food-grade hemp and marijuana are from the same family of plants, they are in fact each a different species, with different characteristics. So, the simple answer is NO - Navitas Naturals hemp will not trigger a drug test. Yet since this issue is an important one, here's why we think hemp is safe and stand behind our line of hemp products.

Our premium hemp comes from one of the largest suppliers in Canada and is certified organic, kosher, gluten-free, vegan and raw. Both the Canadian and US governments have very strict regulations on THC levels in industrial and food grade hemp. Navitas Naturals hemp is regularly tested and the labs consistently come up with “non-detectable†amounts of THC, which means the levels are virtually nonexistent - less than one part per million.

Legally-imported hemp food does not contain THC, does not make you high, and does not trigger a positive result in drug testing. If this is the only source of THC in your body, it is virtually impossible to fail a drug test by eating hemp foods, since the THC levels in our products are barely measurable.

In terms of nutrition, hemp foods provide a healthy dose of protein, omega fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants and minerals. Hemp seeds, for example, are an excellent and easily-digestible vegetarian protein source that includes all of the essential amino acids. In a study published in the Journal of Nutraceuticals, researchers found that the health benefits of hemp oil included lower blood cholesterol levels, increase in metabolism, and resistance to cancer, inflammation, and blood clotting.

In food products, hemp has a pleasantly nutty taste, similar to sunflower seeds - it's definitely the kind of superfood you can choose to feature as a flavor if you wish! Navitas Naturals Hemp Seeds can be enjoyed straight out of the bag, or sprinkled on your favorite dishes from salads to pasta to cereal for a nutritional boost. And our Hemp Protein Powder is easy to mix in smoothies and baked goods too. For hemp on-the-go, our Blueberry Hemp Power Snacks are great for road trips or to stash in your desk drawer.
