    Ask The Chef: Holiday Smoothies

By Julie Morris, Superfood Chef | December 22, 2012

I love the holiday drinks that coffee shops offer this time of year. Any tips on making smoothies a little more festive for the holidays too?
    -Ruth B.

Yes! We love holiday drinks just as much as you do, and have been enjoying some fun holiday blends around the office to bring a little extra cheer to our blender favorites. Here are a few smoothie ideas to make your superfood smoothie extra festive!

Pumpkin-Spice - Pumpkin puree is a beautiful ingredient to use in smoothies, which adds richness and flavor, all at a very low calorie cost! Add in some cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, raw cashews, coconut water, and a little camu powder for a blend that's extra cozy.

Egg Nog - Creamy and smooth, an eggnog smoothie is an unusual but fun way to get blended! Use cashews and water/almond milk as the creamy base, add hemp seeds in for extra richness and protein, and add a little coconut sugar for sweetness. Don't forget a sprinkle of nutmeg and a couple drops of rum extract for an authentic egg nog flavor!

Cranberry - Cranberry is a favorite fruit of this season, and both the whole berries as well as the juice make wonderful smoothie additions. Especially when combined with immune-boosting superfoods like camu powder or goji berries, this is one smoothie style that is sure to keep you healthy during the cold/flu season. Our delicious Smoothment recipe is a winter favorite!

Candy Cane Chocolate - It's no secret that our raw cacao powder blended with almond ice cubes, coconut sugar or dates, and a frozen banana is one of the most decadent and delicious blends around! But, add a couple drops of peppermint oil to the mix and voilà! You have an amazingly special holiday blend at your fingertips.

Apple Cider - Just because apple cider is traditionally served as a hot drink doesn't mean those flavors don't make a beautiful smoothie! Use ripe pears as the base, and blend with some superberries like goldenberries or mulberries, warming spices like cloves and cinnamon, and apple juice as the liquid. This is a great one to add in a couple handfuls of leafy greens into as well.

    Happy holidays!
