Ask the Chef: Using Hemp in Smoothies

By Julie Morris, Superfood Chef | June 3, 2013

    Happy hemp history week!

Undoubtedly, hemp is one of our top superfood smoothie ingredients. From adding the hulled seeds to using hemp protein powder, this superfood is renowned for making power drinks that energize and satisfy. Here, we've compiled a few frequently asked questions on our superstar superseed.

    Hemp FAQ:

What are the main benefits of hemp?

Hemp is a complete source of protein, contains many minerals like iron, is high in fiber, and the seeds are a good source of essential fatty acids.

How much protein is in hemp?

Hemp seeds offer 5 grams of protein per serving (1½ tablespoons ). Navitas Naturals Hemp Powder offers 16 grams of protein per serving (4 tablespoons).

    Where is hemp grown?

Navitas Naturals hemp is grown organically in Canada.

What is the difference between hemp seeds and hemp protein powder?

Our hemp seeds are the hulled, whole, raw seed. Hemp protein powder is made by cold-pressing the oil out of these seeds, then cold-milling the resulting “cake†into a fine powder that is naturally concentrated in protein.

Can I use whole hemp seeds in smoothies?

Absolutely - hemp seeds blend very easily when added to smoothies. They will make your smoothie creamier, similar to adding milk.

    What does hemp taste like?

Hemp has a mild nutty flavor that tastes similar to a sunflower seed.

Will using hemp products get me high/show up on a drug test?

No. Though hemp is a cousin of marijuana, they are not the same plant, and THC (the phytochemical responsible for a “high) is not present in Navitas Naturals hemp seeds or grocery-grade hemp products.
