3 Healthy Hacks for Fall (Using Snack Bars!)

They've saved you during a long car ride. They've been there for you at the start of a busy morning that's running late. And they've helped you summit your favorite hike feeling even better than when you started. Yep, the healthy convenience of energy bars is pretty awesome. But, as it turns out, these versatile snacks are even more useful than meets the eye!

When you choose a good energy bar, such as the Superfood+ varieties, which are made with clean ingredients and top-tier superfoods, you're getting an excellent array of nutrition in the form of a very delicious snack. Yet, this snack need not be destined to a lifetime of a la carte enjoyment. Believe it or not, energy bars make an ideal addition to all kinds of recipes – saving you time and boosting your nutrition in the process! Here are three of our favorite recipe hacks using Navitas Organics Superfood+ Snack Bars to create some new-and-improved meals.

Pump Up Parfaits
Everyone loves the layered, scoopable nature of a good breakfast or dessert parfait, but the empty-calorie cereals or high-sugar granolas that are layered into the mix can make quick work of short-changing your healthy efforts. Instead, using crumbled energy bars in their place, helps to compliment the yogurt and fruit often used, and efficiently ensures your creation is more nutritionally balanced: offering protein, good fats and bonus micronutrients. You can use almost any flavor of snack bar to create this effect, simply crumbling it into little bits by hand. One favorite is any chocolate-inclusive variety like Cacao Cranberry, which can give the most wholesome recipes an almost brownie sundae-like effect.

Sprinkle onto Salads
You wouldn't always think of putting something sweet with something savory like vegetables, but these opposite flavors are often used in tandem in fresh combinations like salads. Along the same lines as a sprinkle of dried fruit or candied nuts, breaking down an energy bar into small pieces and using it as a kind of chewy crouton can add loads of flavor, making your vegetables truly irresistible while sneaking in the superfoods, too. This is clearly a case where chocolate doesn't work as well, but all kinds of fruity varieties are particularly welcome! Try a salad of baby greens, quinoa, shaved carrots or beets, mixed in your favorite vinaigrette and finished with a Goji Acai bar sprinkled on top – shockingly good!

Create Cookies
This is one of my favorite hacks around the holidays and I've become accustomed to doing it every year. Instead of holiday cookies (or at least, in addition to an obligatory batch), take several snack bars and just roll them out into a quarter-inch layer with a rolling pin. Use small cookie cutters to stamp them into fun shapes and serve your snack-bar “cookies” alongside any holiday spread – a no-guilt way to get in the festive spirit while keeping your food choices as clean as they can be! My Fresh Start
I grew up around the kitchen table. My father owned and managed several restaurants, while my mom worked as a chef in some of the most prestigious international hotels. Between the frequent dinner parties they loved to host and the quality of food they chose to serve, they taught me that the best food involves basic techniques, fresh ingredients and a whole lot of love.

 

My Relationship with Plant-Based Foods
I moved to New York for college and went on to work at many bars and restaurants myself, all the while embracing an active lifestyle as a martial artist. I ate what I thought was a fairly healthy diet at the time, but all the late nights and long hours started catching up with me. I was perpetually tired, got sick frequently and developed other symptoms of adrenal fatigue. That’s when I stepped away from my fast-paced life in the city and began exploring natural healing modalities, such as yoga, Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was during this personal journey that my own relationship with plants and superfoods blossomed. I made it my mission to find simple, fun and delicious ways of enjoying life and celebrating food. Superfoods is a term which is frequently used but not always understood. To help clarify what exactly a superfood is and what its sources are, I am launching a mini-series: "Superfoods 101." I plan on diving into some of my favorite superfoods, discussing their nutritional benefits and showcasing a simple recipe which highlights the versatility of superfoods.

 

What is a Superfood? 
Superfoods are nutrient-dense foods which promote health and wellbeing. They can range from Chia Seeds to blueberries to spinach to Cacao. A healthy individual should integrate traditional superfoods into their diet such as dark leafy greens, legumes, berries, nuts, seeds and cruciferous vegetables for optimal health. For added nutritive benefits and functioning, integrating more specialized superfoods such as Chia Seeds, Maca, Cacao and Goji Berries aid bowel regularity and immune functioning, improve skin clarity, reduce inflammation, and increase energy and optimal wellness. When purchasing superfoods, you want to look for products that are organic, fair trade and sustainable since most of the specialized superfoods come from various countries around the world.

 

Why Goji Berries Top My List
Goji Berries are one of my favorite versatile superfoods that can easily be integrated into granola, oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies or trail mixes. You can also rehydrate them for a few minutes in warm water - the taste resembles a sweet tomato - and mix them into a grain or serve on top of a soup. All berries are considered superfoods in my book due to their antioxidant power. However, Goji Berries contain higher amounts of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which help with immune function, boost collagen production and protect against premature aging. Goji Berries have high amounts of Vitamin C, Vitamin A and iron, and also contain all essential amino acids, making them a complete protein.

Goji Berries Over Gummy Bears

It’s so easy to pull into the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant and pick a couple of things from the menu. It’s quick, satisfying and cheap. The thing we are missing with this mode of eating, however, is not only what it’s doing to us, but what it’s doing to our children.


I grew up in an “open cabinet home,” meaning if I was hungry, I grabbed whatever I wanted until I was full. Sadly, I didn’t have self control, and although I love my parents to death, they had horrible food choices due to lack of knowledge about nutrition and its impact on the human body.


If you read stories of those on their death beds, they would trade anything for one thing: more time. Yet, when we eat these quick fixes, we are literally removing time from our lifespans.


I struggled as a fat kid. My nickname in high school was “Fat Tom,” because there were two Toms in my social circle and I was the heavy one. I still struggle with my weight to this day, as it can fluctuate over time, but I have a better understanding of proper nutrition, health and fitness. The only problem is that I learned about these important elements later in life.
