5 Steps to a Healthier (and Stress-Free!) Holiday Season

Posted by Megan Faletra on Dec 19, 2018 8:43:37 AM

The holidays are one of the most exciting times of the year, but they also come with travel, indulgent foods and unwanted stress that can leave us all feeling depleted at times. But, with a little planning, you can fully enjoy the holidays from beginning to end. Protect your health and keep your stress levels low this year by following these five simple steps to a healthier (and stress-free!) holiday season.

1. Plan Healthy Meals and Snacks
While there’s an abundance of delicious holiday food around at all times throughout the holidays, you shouldn’t forgo your usual healthy meals and snacks. One of the worst things you can do during the holidays is skip meals, as that will leave you feeling ravenous and incapable of making mindful choices. Instead, make a promise to continue feeding yourself well throughout the holidays by planning regular meals and snacks that keep you full and satisfied. This will help you make healthier choices that aren’t fueled by uncontrollable hunger when you’re exposed to holiday indulgences.

2. Practice Mindful Eating at Parties
Holiday parties are hard to navigate, especially if you’re trying to continue healthy eating practices throughout the holidays. Rather than putting limitations on what you can and can’t have at holiday parties, try practicing mindful eating habits like these:

• Have a satisfying snack at home before going to a holiday party so you make better choices once you’re out.
• Tune into your cravings and choose what you truly desire at the party, versus what’s sitting in front of you.
• Eat slowly and save the alcohol for when your stomach is full, so you can enjoy a holiday cocktail without it impacting your eating choices.

3. Support a Healthy Gut
Nothing puts a damper on the holidays like getting sick, so it’s especially important to support your digestive system during this time. Since 80 percent of your immune system lives in your gut, keep it feeling it’s best by adding Vanilla & Greens Essential Superfood Blend to your daily wellness routine. Loaded with plant-based protein, digestive support, essential minerals and antioxidants in one easy-to-use mix, it’s a great way to boost your nutrition and support your gut at the same time.

4. Prioritize Sleep
While the holidays are busy, this is not the time of year to skimp on sleep. Getting enough sleep will help keep your immune system healthy and make it easier to stay motivated to continue your mindful movement and healthy eating habits throughout the season.

5. Add Adaptogens
Lastly, adaptogens are a great addition to your daily wellness routine throughout the holiday season (and beyond!), as they help the body adapt and respond to external stressors that help it maintain a state of balance. A simple way to incorporate adaptogens into your day is by adding a teaspoon of Maca Powder to your morning smoothie or mixing it into your oatmeal.

What's the Difference Between Cocoa and Cacao?

If you’re a chocolate lover, you’ve likely noticed that chocolate ingredients vary between containing cocoa and Cacao and that both products are also sold individually on the shelf. Though their names are similar and they are derived from the same source, there are actually significant differences between the two—in processing, flavor and nutritional value!

Snacks and parties go hand-in-hand with the all-important munch-while-you-mingle tradition.

Unfortunately, most party snacks are far from healthy due to busy hosts who may not have time to make involved recipes or research all those popular diet-friendly plates. So, when looking to create healthier snacks, consider these simple tricks to keep your to-do list light while benefiting your guests with superfoods.

All the Amazing Benefits of Cashews You Never Knew About

Posted by Julie Morris, Navitas Organics Executive Chef on Nov 23, 2018 9:01:18 AM

Nuts are some of the healthiest and most satisfying snacks you’ll find anywhere in the world and there are dozens of different types to choose from. However, one of my absolute favorite nuts is the mighty cashew. You may know cashews as a great-tasting snack or a good way to make a plant-based cream, but here are some of the other many amazing benefits of cashews that you might not be aware of!

Lower Cholesterol Levels
Many people struggle to keep their cholesterol at a healthy level because of dietary habits and genetics. Research shows that cashews help to decrease total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, which ultimately supports a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. Since high cholesterol leads to many other serious conditions, eating a few cashews a day is a great preventative measure for long-term health.

Control and Manage Diabetes
Another huge benefit of cashews is how these nuts help control and manage diabetes when eaten as part of a healthy diet. There is strong evidence to suggest that the bioactive components of these nuts help manage diabetes because of how they affect glucose and insulin responses and reduce inflammation. Better yet, cashews help prevent the onset of diabetes because of their inflammation-reducing properties.

Prevent Various Chronic Diseases
Cashews are also rich in many of the vitamins that keep chronic diseases away, including B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc and phosphorous. Cashews are also packed with fiber, protein and iron to provide an even more well-rounded nutrient profile to fight chronic disease. Obesity is a major cause of chronic disease and cashews can help prevent obesity by helping you feel fuller longer, while curbing unhealthy food cravings.

Maintain Bone Health
Something that many people don’t realize about cashews is that they also help to maintain good bone health. This is because cashews contain potassium, calcium, magnesium and vitamin K – all of which support strong bones. By adding more cashews to your diet, you can help reduce your risk of breaks, sprains and osteoporosis later in life.

Promote Brain Functioning
I also love cashews because of their brain-boosting benefits that help you think clearer and feel more positive. Your brain is largely made up of fat, which means that it needs healthy fats, like the ones contained in cashews, to function well. Deficiencies in the minerals of iron, zinc and copper can lead to anxiety and depression, but fortunately, cashews contain these mental health-boosting minerals, too.

Not All Cashews Are Created Equal
Despite the amazing benefits of cashews, it’s important to remember that not all cashews are created equal. Navitas Organics Cashew Nuts are processed with the ultimate care and undergo a low-heat extraction process. This ensures that all the cashews’ incredible nutrients, healthy fats and delicious flavors are preserved for your snacking pleasure. To see just how versatile cashews really are in smoothies, salads, stir-fries, trail mixes and desserts, browse our cashew recipes to find a new way to enjoy this amazing nut!

The Magic of Maqui

Posted by Jules Aron on Sep 13, 2018 10:19:16 AM

To celebrate Navitas Organics' 15-year anniversary, I've teamed up to share some insight into one of my favorite superfoods, the Maqui Berry and celebrate with a delicious superfood Maqui Cheesecake recipe below.

The Maqui Berry is an intensely purple berry that grows wild throughout southern Chile. Like many dark fruits and berries, such as Pomegranate, Acai, elderberries, blueberries and blackberries, Maqui Berries are very rich in anthocyanins, which give them their purple pigments and high antioxidant levels.

The Maqui Berry, in particular, contains high levels of anthocyanins called delphinidins, which is also found in violas, delphiniums, and Concord grapes. But these compounds are found in very high amounts in the humble Maqui Berry. The delphinidins are especially conducive at protecting cells from oxidative stress, supporting healthy immune function and reducing the risk of degenerative diseases that involve inflammation. They are also helpful in reducing blood sugar levels and decreasing glucose absorption.

These tart little berries are hardly ever found fresh outside South America, so we are extremely lucky to have Navitas carry them in an organic freeze-dried powder form. Tastewise, they resemble a mix of blackberries, blueberries and watermelon, and blend well with fresh juices and smoothies or mixed into desserts, yogurts and porridge.

And without further ado, I'd like to raise a spoonful of this gluten-free, dairy-free, superfood Maqui Cheesecake to a brand I can proudly stand behind, another 15 years!

BLUEBERRY MAQUI CHEESECAKE
You’ll love this completely raw recipe for the creamiest, berry cashew cheese filling with a dense, chewy, chocolatey crust made of walnuts, coconuts, dates and raw Cacao.

CRUST
1 cup Dates, pitted
1/2 cup Shredded Coconut
1 cup Raw Walnuts
1 Tbsp Navitas Organics Cacao
Sea Salt

FILLING
2 cups Navitas Organics Cashews, soaked overnight
½ cup Lemon Juice
½ cup Coconut Oil
½ cup Maple Syrup
1 tsp Vanilla

BLUEBERRY MAQUI LAYER
1/2 the Filling Mix
1/4 cup Blueberries
2 tsp Navitas Organics Maqui Powder

Add the nuts, salt, Cacao, dates and coconut to your food processor or blender and process to a coarse meal. Transfer the mixture to a spring form pan or individual tart shells and press down to form the crust. Place in the freezer to chill.

Add the filling ingredients into your high-speed blender and process. Add as little water as necessary to facilitate blending. Pour half the mixture on top of your crust and place in the freezer for one hour.

4 Irresistible Back-to-School Super Swaps

Posted by Julie Morris, Navitas Organics Executive Chef on Sep 9, 2018 3:45:02 PM

Heading back to school means more than just a collection of new notebooks and a refreshed commitment to learning. It's also the perfect time to give the quintessential school lunch a healthy, fun upgrade. But, while packing daily lunches for kids is a challenge bemoaned by parents everywhere – not because it's so difficult, but because getting the nutrition your child needs in a format they'll enjoy is not always the easiest task – encouraging your child to eat well doesn’t have to be so complex. Instead of giving the school lunch a complete overhaul, you can keep the food structures your child enjoys the same (such as sandwiches), while introducing some super ingredient swaps along the way to enhance their nutrient capacity. Easy for you and enjoyable for them, these “super swaps” are a win-win. Here are a few of our favorites:

Boost the Juice
If there were a lunch-drink hierarchy, water would be at the top, followed by real fruit juice, ending with soda at the bottom. For many children, plain water is a little too uneventful, but juice is always gratifying. An excellent way to make juice more convincing to you as well is to add a Daily Superfood Boost into the mix, ensuring there's bonus fiber and immune-boosting vitamins to help round out the nutrition. If your child is more of the chocolate milk-type, try one of our favorite super swaps: a thermos filled with unsweetened almond milk mixed with Navitas Organics Cacao & Greens Essential Superfood Blend for a low-sugar, protein-rich, superfood-packed drink that's unbeatably delicious!

Introduce the Rainbow
When incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into school lunches, don’t think you have to stick to a boring apple or some carrot sticks. Many children appreciate a spectrum of color waiting for them in their lunchbox and will be more apt to eat something that looks “fun” versus one type of produce. Fruit salads are an excellent way to go, which can be made on the weekend and enjoyed all week for ease. Include colorful items like blueberries, strawberries, oranges, pineapple chunks and even cut cucumber for a little (mild) vegetable addition. Similarly, make cut vegetables fun, too, by including a medley of things like bell pepper sticks, broccoli, colored cauliflower or rainbow carrots. Teaching children that produce can be just as magical as their colorful toys is a great way to keep healthy eating something to which they can look forward.

Snack Wisely
Children need healthy snacks to fuel them throughout the day and they love bags of munchies like cereal or trail mix to peck away at mid-morning or in the early afternoon hours. If your child already has a favorite mix, there's no need to rock the boat too much with a complete overhaul, but you can certainly add in superfoods to enhance the overhaul nutrition. You can give savory mixes protein-rich upgrades with healthy nuts and seeds, and enhance sweet trail mixes with a handful of Goji Berries or Mulberries thrown in for bonus vitamins and antioxidants.

Turn Snack Bars into Dessert
I don't need to tell you that children love having a sweet treat stashed away in their lunch bag. But, instead of packaged cookies or a candy bar, try a Superfood Snack Bar instead. Each of the four Navitas varieties include minimally processed superfood ingredients like Chia, quinoa and Acai in a low-sugar organic base that includes several kinds of mineral-rich nuts. The result is a bar that tastes like a treat but acts like a vitamin and is definitely kid- (and grown-up) approved!

Real Food. Real Life. Made Simple.

Posted by Erin Parekh on Sep 5, 2018 10:03:51 AM

Hi! I’m Erin Parekh, Holistic Health Coach, Culinary Nutrition Expert, and plant-based recipe developer.

My Philosophy
I believe that being healthy doesn’t have to be hard or complicated — that living a fulfilling life and eating the most beautiful, delicious, nourishing food is well within reach for all of us.

But, in order to do this, we have to cut through the noise (there’s a lot of it) and get back to basics. No diets or programs. No hours spent in the kitchen. No killing it at the gym every day.

Just Real Food. Real Life. Made Simple.

This little mantra is what I strive for personally. It’s how I develop recipes and how I coach my clients. Because at the end of the day, no one (not even a health coach!) is going to stick with healthy habits long-term if they aren’t enjoyable or easy.

My Story
I spent the majority of my early adult life struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, disordered eating, and a 50-pound weight fluctuation. I tried every diet book, workout video, and weight-loss supplement available — thinking that if I could just maintain a certain number on the scale, everything would fall magically into place. But as I’m sure you can guess, that wasn’t the case at all.
